THIS IS WHAT 30 YEARS HAS LED TO
Brothers Don and Michael have focussed their careers into this exacting idea which is Bartier Bros. wine. These wines represent unique and precious Okanagan Valley attributes; purity, freshness, vibrancy, and above all, intensity.
Inspired by the award winning Okanagan winemaker Michael Bartier, Bartier Bros. Wines are an earnest expression of the Okanagan Valley’s geography, history and people. The Valley’s ethos dictates a proud resilience optimism and self-reliance where the hallmark qualities of hard work and contentment reign.
Inspiration is always useful, and the valley has it in spades, but it is the fundamental work ethic that has always fulfilled this inspiration. So it should come as no great surprise to learn it is the indefatigable dedication to the work itself that drives the Bartier Bros’ farming and winegrowing philosophy.
“We are from and of this valley.
We grew up here, we know it, we love it, and we are responsible to it.” – Michael & Don Bartier
Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars has always been a family operation, started by Jane and Ian Mavety in 1971. For 21 years the Mavetys supplied premium grapes to commercial wineries when finally the allure of producing quality wines inspired them to craft their own label in 1991.
In that time, they had championed new grape varieties in the region, honed their viticulture skills and developed their wine making techniques. Today, on their 31-hectare estate, they make limited quantities of complex wines from noble varietals including Pinot Noir, Gamay Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay — the same varietals found in the Champagne, Burgundy and Alsace regions of France. In the vineyard, methods favor low crop yields to concentrate and intensify flavours. While using modern equipment in the winery, wine making is respectful of traditional methods.
Today the passion for their métier is shared by two generations of Mavetys, an assurance that a key principle of the family’s viticulture and wine-making practices is carried on – that of consistency. Everyone participates in both vineyard and winery work, sharing talent and knowledge with each other. Here we offer a peek into the lives, philosophies and motivations of the people behind the passion.
Culmina Family Estate Winery is the result of a lifetime of experience in the wine industry for Don, Elaine and Sara Triggs. Having worked in the industry for a combined 40+ years, Don and Elaine began in 2006 with a simple goal: to make the highest quality wines possible from their own family estate.
The Triggs embarked on a new phase of their lives in 2006. For Don, it marked the end of a major chapter in his life, having nurtured a successful Canadian wine business from its inception to its acquisition by a US-based company in 2006. However Don, an entrepreneur at heart, decided that instead of thinking about retirement, he and his wife would pursue another direction. Still having a passion for growing grapes, and wanting to create something truly special, Don and Elaine embarked on a journey to develop a boutique family winery estate that crafted remarkable, terroir-driven wines.
Purchasing raw land in 2007 and joined by their daughter Sara in 2012, the Triggs began developing their new estate, naming it ‘Culmina’ (CUL-mihn-uh). Translating to the ‘peak‘ or ‘apex’ in Latin, they chose the name to reflect not only their lifetime of efforts in the wine industry, but also their desire to coax the highest possible quality grapes from their incredible virgin terroir.
At Maverick Estate Winery, we believe our family and friends—and yours—deserve exceptional wine. Bucking today’s highly mechanized, high-production trends, we are instead committed to a by-hand, Old World approach to winemaking. We are deliberately small in production, deliberately patient in our process because we believe that working in tune with nature is the only way to capture the clean, rich, multi-layered flavors of premium fruit.
As we say in our house, Gesondheid – Cheers – from our family to yours!
River Stone Estate Winery is a small, family owned and operated winery located in the South Okanagan. We are located on a small knoll in the middle of the valley, just south of the well-recognized McIntyre Bluff and just north of Oliver, BC, the Wine Capital of Canada.
The winery site is surrounded by our hand tended vineyard. When we moved to the Okanagan Valley we chose this site for its superb grape-growing qualities and planted the vineyard with a Bordeaux style blend in mind, which we have called Corner Stone. As our winery name, River Stone, and vineyard name, River Rock Vineyards suggest, our wines come from the deep rock and gravel soils laid down following the last glacial recession. We grow five red Bordeaux varietals; Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot as well as two white varietals; Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer. Long sunlit summer days followed by fall’s warm days and cool nights have consistently produced premium quality fruit.
Like people who strive for balanced lives, grapevines are no different, so we aim to maintain balance in our vineyards.
Our approach to growing and winemaking is based on the view that the vineyard is a complex environment where a variety of systems are constantly at work. We are always aware that we are dealing with living things that are sensitive to their environments; it is essential that plants be observed closely, left to their own growth in many respects, and helped along when necessary.
Grape growing requires an intimate understanding of our vines and soils, and how both will respond to variables like climate, crop load, and sunlight- to name a few. Instruments help us by describing the environment and vine condition, but we believe there is no substitute for the discerning eye of an experienced grower.
We recognize that every element within the vineyard environment- be it soil, moisture, microbe, or temperature- is vital to the living process from which our wines originate. Balancing these elements provides a character that is uniquely expressed in our wines. It cannot be duplicated anywhere else.
Careful stewardship of our land ensures that we maintain a balanced, healthy environment for the vines that results in balance and complexity in our wines.

Established in 1995, Stag’s Hollow is a family-owned winery in Okanagan Falls, producing some of British Columbia’s highest quality, most distinctive wines. Nestled in the foothills of the South Okanagan, Stag’s Hollow includes two vineyards…the Estate Vineyard and Shuttleworth Creek Vineyard…. within 2 kms of each other. From the day the vineyard was purchased in 1992, concerns for the environment have been a priority at Stag’s Hollow. A geothermal system was built into both the home and winery building in 1995 at a time when going ‘green’ was not yet the thing to do. When space ran out, a new winery building was constructed in 2005, which again included a geothermal system. This system heats and cools the winery building, heats and cools all the wine tanks and provides different heating and cooling requirements to the barrel room, fermentation room and wine storage areas. In addition, high efficiency windows, energy efficient lighting, and high insulation values were utilized throughout the building. These environmental initiatives earned Stag’s Hollow recognition from Fortis BC and the Federal Government in 2006.
Always innovative, with a spirit to be unique and push the limits of both grape growing and winemaking in the Okanagan, the team at Stag’s Hollow has researched and sought out grapes, both new and old, suited to the area soils and microclimate. These include Tempranillo and Albarino from Spain, Grenache and Marsanne from the Rhone Valley and Dolcetto from Italy. These unique varietals offer a new experience for the Okanagan Wine lover. Although these grapes come from all over the world, our wines from these grapes are identifiable, as being from nowhere else in the world but from the Okanagan Valley.
